How Was The Grand Canyon Formed?
Published: 07/02/2024
The Grand Canyon is situated in the United States, on the Colorado River. Did you know that the Grand Canyon didn't form in a single event, but it needed a million years to have the result that we have now? Experts think that 35 million years ago there wasn't any Grand Canyon in that area. In millions of years, the rocks shaped into this amazing natural phenomenon that has become the Grand Canyon that we have today.
The Colorado river was once divided in two parts, by the Kaibab Plateau, which was starting to shape. The eastern part of the river became blocked, and it slowly became a very big lake. This lake is known as lake Bidahochi. The rocks couldn't stand weathering their surface, so it became weaker and weaker over time. Then, water broke through the barrier that had been created by the Kaibab plateau and rejoined the original “map” of the Colorado River. So, the river had then a new course (that was similar to the original one) for good conditions, and Lake Bidahochi lost much of its water. When both of the parts went together again and put their forces together, then the way became wider and deeper, so the Grand Canyon was formed!
The Grand Canyon is a very interesting site to see, that is why more than 5 million people visit the Grand Canyon every year. It's a very interesting site to visit, you will be fascinated by thi amazing natural phenomenon.
